An Idea, A Blog & The Beginning Of Something New

I had a flash of inspiration today after looking for artists to inspire my project. One artist I found is called Ellen Stapleton - I'll do a proper artist breakdown in another post, but the gist of it is she creates incredible bright murals - here's one of my favourites.

The colours, the lines, the boldness of it??? I love it

This got me thinking. Last year I used myself in my project and based all my characters & art on my own makeup & face. It's a good and easy option but not one I'd particularly like to do again, I'd like to bring other people into this as I feel it's easier to experiment when it's not my own face. I really want to look more into portraits because I really feel I can get some strong ideas from that, but also cos I think identity reflects in our faces, the way we dress and how we present ourselves to the world. The survey had some brilliant responses, with the alternative & pole communities having the most answers. But how do I put all this together?

I usually work with paint, so I knew I wanted to go bold and bright.

So here was a very hastily put together idea -

Using one of Ellens paintings I edited myself on top of it to see if it could work as a portrait with a bright and bold background. I really like it to be honest, you can still see me clearly even with how busy the background is. I wanted to try and include things that I am interested in or consider part of my identity, so using a very basic photoshop app I made this -

I didn't like it as much but I felt it was good start at what I was trying to do.

In my tutorial the other day me and Chloe had spoke about creating a blog, which is where all this came from! This used to a personal blog but I've repurposed it for the project/university year. Thinking about the social media idea, I was thinking about maybe trying to get people to volunteer to be part of the project. I want this to be a collaborative effort between me and the people who want to be part of this, especially as right now I am looking at the community side of things.

SO

I have a pretty big following on twitter - mostly alternative people but plenty of people who aren't. I've put out a post asking if anyone would be interested as I need outside sources to continue my project as I would like to work with the alternative, pole & gaming communities preferably as my survey indicated that they are what's available to me!

I've also posted it on my instagram for more of my friends to get involved if they want to.

Here's what I'm asking people for -

"Wanting a slice of the action? Or just want your face on the project? Here's what I need from yous -

I need two or three photos of you - I can't use mirror ones but I can use selfies! I don't mind if there are filters on them but they do need to be good lighting.

Star Signs - I want to know your sun, moon & rising! If you don't know them that's okay, we can work them out! You can use https://justastrologythings.com/pages/chart/ to find out yours.

What communities do you feel you are part of? - I am looking for alternative/metal, pole, gaming or LGBQT+ in particular but it's okay if you're not part of these! I'd love to hear about the communities you do engage with or even if you feel not part of any - why do you feel that way? Remember identity is individual and your answers are unique!

Where do you feel you fit into your communities?

What drew you to them?

How do you express them in everyday life or do you feel that you hide them?

Do you believe communities help make up our identities?

I am also after your fave lyrics/song/album/quote - you can send me all 4 or just pick one! Completely up to you.

If you could email me your answers and photos at skarletzombieart@gmail.com I would be eternally grateful!

This is a collaborative effort and your personal info won't shared and your photos will not be shared anywhere, however your answers will be put on the volunteer section of this blog."

Stay tuned to see if anyone volunteers.....
