This was the first piece I made for the exhibition born of the background experiment I tried. She is a pole dancer, alt & the colour of her hair really inspired me. She seemed like a softer version of an alternative girl so I wanted to make her bright but with softer edges. I worked with watercolour to create this effect and really loved how it came out. I was thinking about how I could include pole and really liked this pose one of the girls sent me, and added lyrics off one of the songs she sent me.
When I started digitally experimenting I tried to recreate it, but worked with a pink marble background instead as I felt it looked fabulous against her hair.
I blew her photo up to print it out so I could make this physically.
I've never made a marble background before, and I only had acrylic paint so I looked up how to do acrylic pour painting! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbqsIuc6rdE&t=414s
It really didn't go how I thought it would - maybe my paint was too thin? However I really loved how it came out, it looked like a pink and gold galaxy!
The scan didn't take on the background and I didn't realise, but I re used my trace of the pole dancer to add it to the drawing! I draw in pencil on both sides and then flip it to the right side and draw over the background AND the trace - it leaves a pencil print meaning you can go over it in fineliner no problem.
Here's the scans from the traces I used - I didn't use the second one.
Here's some progress shots -
