Hi, I'm Gee! I'm 22, originally from Birmingham and I do a fine art degree at Sheffield Hallam University. My dream is become a secondary school art teacher and I decided I wanted to do this after teaching arts & crafts at a camp in New York. I was a bit of rebel in school but art was the only subject I would consistently show up for, I didn't care if I got bad grades I just enjoyed making things and being in the studio.
I enjoy rock & metal music, the alternative scene, poledancing, vegan & veggie food, gaming, reading and fashion. I have a golden retriever and 4 tortoises therefore making me a crazy tortoise lady.
You can keep up with me at:

What communities do you feel you are part of? - I am part of the alternative world through a bunch of outlets! Music, fashion, lifestyle etc. I am pole dancer and very passionate about it as it is an outlet for my emotions and anxiety and being in my uni society has allowed me to make friends & do things I never normally would have done. I feel that I am part of the gaming community because I've been playing for as long as I can remember (playstation for life!) but I don't play a lot things online as I prefer story based games so I don't actually interact with the community much. I'd started streaming to bridge that gap but I've moved back home so had to stop. I am veggie due to my IBS and I try to live as close to a vegan lifestyle as possible so I like to loosely stay in veggie/vegan communities for tips on food & lifestyle. I'm very close to my family and we are almost a little community within ourselves, even when I'm living away I talk to someone at least once a day and do my best to help with anything - even if it's just my mom needs a chat!
Where do you feel you fit into your communities?/What drew you to them? Personally, the biggest one I resonate with is the alternative community. I was introduced to metal by my brother, he took me to my first gig when I was 13 and we've both been hooked since. We've been to countless gigs and festivals, shared countless bands, I stole his band shirts until he bought me some of my own. When I got a bit older I found people like me on tumblr & Instagram and I ran fan pages for my favourite bands. Walking into Download Festival at 15 and seeing everyone look just like me was a revolutionary moment for me, that this was the right way and I don't need to dull myself down or make myself into a "normal" girl the way people at school wanted me to be.
I started pole because I was lonely and needed to get out the house and it looked a fab way to get fit. I joined the pole society when I came to university and it has been so good for me, I genuinely do not think I'd have any friends in sheffield without it, it has helped my confidence and anxiety massively.
How do you express them in everyday life or do you feel that you hide them? Like I said before, walking into download and seeing everyone look just like me gave me a new bounce of confidence. I dye my hair as part of my expression, it's normally some form of pink or red but I've experimented with purple, orange and I had split red and black at one point. I wear a lot of colourful makeup and you can normally find me wearing black. I don't like to wear tight things because of my IBS flare ups so I'm normally in an oversized shirt lol
I've recently started on a patch jacket - if you don't what a patch jacket is in the metal world it's basically your stamp of who you are and what bands you like. It originally comes from the DIY era of punk along with the era of mods & rockers as they would sew patches on to represent where their 'allegiance' lay.
I think looking at me you can definitely tell I am alternative, I don't hide it however I don't think you would know I am a poledancer or gamer just from looking at me.
Do you believe communities help make up our identities? Yes. I don't feel our entire identities come from them BUT I do think they heavily make up who we are. We find out who we are in them, but identity constantly changes and I think we can move away from communities as we grow and change.
Fave Lyrics - Whatever takes us away, will be the same to drive us on
If you believe in nothing else, just keep believing in yourself
The way of the beast is tragedy by design
Through your abuse I learned to love myself
You've nowhere left to go, I've fought through liars and lows
